Charleston's Spoleto Festival
Every spring, Charleston hosts Spoleto Festival USA, one of the world’s major arts festivals. This festival was established in 1977 as the American counterpart to the festival held annually in Spoleto, Italy. For 17 days and nights, Spoleto Festival USA features over 120 performances by renowned and emerging artists on the world stage. Days of opera, symphony, jazz, art, sand sculpture at the beach, and more are right out your front door!

Piccolo Spoleto
Piccolo Spoleto, which is a marvelous complement to Spoleto Festival USA, features an additional 700 events during the same 17-day period. While its parent festival is international in scope, Piccolo Spoleto showcases artists from the Southeast region and offers events accessible to everyone. We especially enjoy this festival every spring – it brings even more life to our already lively city!

Boone Hall Plantation dating from the mid-1700s and originally a cotton plantation, can be found off Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant. It is the home to many events—from bluegrass and the Scottish Highland Games to a Civil War reenactment of the Battle of Secession Ville. This battle, which took place on June 16, 1862, was the first major union effort to take Charleston. In October, the pumpkin patch is open, with hayrides and fun for adults and children. In the spring, the strawberries are in season, ripe and ready for you to pick a basketful!
Golf in the Charleston Area
In 1786, Charleston became home to the first golf course in America – Harleston Green. In fact, the term "green fee" is thought to have evolved from the membership fees paid to maintain the area green where they played.
Charleston now hosts more than 35 championship courses, designed by such greats as Arthur Hills, Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Rees Jones, Gary Player, and Robert Trent Jones, Sr.
